“We are all in the same boat” was an unofficial slogan of COVID-19, however, the leaders of the German bookstore giant Thalia put action behind those words.
When the coronavirus forced the closure of its 400 physical stores, Thalía had a strong e-commerce operation to turn to, but dozens of independent booksellers did not. This awareness was the origin of Shopdaheim, German for “Shop at Home”. , a platform Thalia has created to connect Germany’s local independent bookstores with online customers.
In an interview with the World Retail Forum conducted through Dan Hodges, CEO of Consumers in Motion, Dr. Leif Erik Goritz, chairman of Thalia’s Supervisory Board, revealed why and how the store helps corporations that are also competitors.

Hodges: How did he grow up?
We’ve had a lot of positive reviews in the media, added from the largest media organization founded in Germany, that gave us a lot of positive exposure and classified ads loose because they said, ‘We want local retail, those are the guys who promote it in our newspapers, so let’s go to them too. Then other media outlets signed up and logistics corporations approached.to sign up for us. Intersport, the largest organization of independent sports outlets, signed up for us.Now I think we have about 10,000 outlets, which is great for an independent base move with only two or 3 assignment managers running on it.thousands of customers use the website. That was the real purpose for us to allow the customer to buy locally.
Hodges: What recommendation would you give retailers?
