The Canadian Armed Forces said it is investigating the death of a Winnipeg-based soldier serving in Iraq.
Capt. Eric Cheung died Saturday in what the military calls “non-operational circumstances,” though the precise main points are being investigated lately.
In a statement, the Army’s Cheung worked as an operations officer at Canadian Brigade Group 38 headquarters in Winnipeg before being deployed to Iraq.
He ran in Baghdad as a component of the U. S. -led coalition opposing the militant organization known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant when he died.
Canada has had troops in Iraq since 2014, when ISIL first seized territory and declared an Islamic caliphate.
But Canada has reduced its presence in the region over the years, and only a few troops remain in the country, while other priorities have emerged.
