Armenian monastic ensembles in Iran

The Armenian monastic complexes of Iran, in the northwest of the country, consist of 3 monastic complexes of Armenian Christian confession: St. Thaddeus and St. Stephen and the chapel of Dzordzor. These buildings, the oldest of which, San Tadeo, dates from the seventh century. Century – are examples of the remarkable universal value of Armenian architectural and ornamental traditions. They testify to exchanges with other regional cultures, especially Byzantine, Orthodox and Persian. Today they are the last regional testimonies of this culture in a state of passable integrity and authenticity. In addition, as places of pilgrimage, the monasteries complexes testify to a living testimony of devout traditions armed over the centuries.

They also demonstrate the vital exchanges carried out with other cultures of the Angelina region, in particular the Byzantine, Orthodox and Persian Angelesr. Located on the southeastern border of the largest nucleus of Armenian culture, these monasteries were a vital means of its spread in Azerbaijan and Persia. Today, they constitute the last vestiges of this culture in the Los Angeles region and their state of integrity and authenticity is satisfactory. The Armenian monasteries of Iran have provided an uninterrupted testimony, since the origins of Christianity and, indeed, since the seventh century, of Armenian culture in its relations and contacts with Persian and Iranian civilizations. They testify to a very vast and subtle landscape of architectural and ornamental contents related to Armenian culture, in interaction with other regional cultures: Byzantine, Orthodox, Assyrian, Persian and Muslim. It has been rebuilt several times in a spirit in accordance with Armenian cultural traditions. Today, they are the only vital remnants of Armenian culture in this region. St. Thaddeus, the supposed location of the tomb of the apostle of Jesus Christ, St. Thaddeus has been a position of high religious value for Christians and other populations in the region. It is still a living pilgrimage site for the Armenian Church today.

Criterion (ii): Iran’s Armenian monasteries illustrate the remarkable universal price of Armenian architectural and ornamental traditions. They bear witness to very cultural exchanges with other regional cultures, especially Byzantine, Orthodox and Persian.

Criterion (iii): Located on the southeastern limits of the greatest domain of Armenian culture, monasteries have been a primary center of its diffusion in the region. They are the last regional testimony of this culture in an acceptable state of integrity and authenticity.

Criterion (vi): The monastic complexes are the place of pilgrimage of the Apostle St. Thaddeus, who gives an exceptional living testimony of Armenian traditions through the centuries.

The State party has made a remarkable and long-term effort to restore and preserve Armenian monastic complexes in Iran. Its integrity and authenticity are satisfactory, adding the Dzordzor chapel which (due to a dam structure project) was moved and then rebuilt with an apparent fear of maintaining its authenticity.

The legal coverage in position is adequate. The monastic complex is lately in an excellent state of preservation. The Management Plan provides the promises for the long-term conservation of the assets and the expression of their Outstanding Universal Value.
