Armenia and Azerbaijan exchange new Karabakh tariffs

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Monday exchanged new tariffs with Azerbaijan’s president, saying his neighbor is not taking action on a treaty that ends 30 years of hostility over Nagorno-Karabakh.

The dispute over the region, a mountainous territory controlled by Azerbaijan since the 1990s through ethnic Armenians, turned into a six-week war in 2020 in which Azeri troops regained swathes of territory. The two sides agreed to paint a peace plan after Russia negotiated a deal. Cease fire.

Pashinyan, quoted through Russian and Armenian media, said Azerbaijan is politicizing peace efforts, adding the factor of building an Armenian rail link between Azerbaijan and its western enclave of Nakhichivan.

The target of protests in recent weeks accusing him of making too many concessions in Karabakh, Pashinyan also said more than 50 Armenian servicemen were charged with treason.

While Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev have held a series of meetings over the past 18 months, progress toward a peace treaty has been slow.

“Azerbaijan refuses to speak, publicly accusing Armenia of refusing to speak,” Pashinyan was quoted as saying by Armenia’s Armenpress news firm at an online press conference. “My record is one: it is done to legitimize a new war against Armenia. “

Regarding the allegations against the Armenian officials, Russian news firm TASS said Pashinyan told reporters that “a large number of cases are now taking positions behind closed doors and the public is not aware of them. . . More than 50 infantrymen are charged with espionage and treason. “

The TASS account gave additional details.

Aliyev last week accused Armenia of complying with the treaty.

Armenia is not complying with its “legal obligations” to allow free access to the railway’s structure, according to Azerbaijani media, which quoted it after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Pashinyan said Aliyev blocked progress on the factor by linking it to the return of prisoners of war to Armenia. (Winnipeg reporting by Ronald Popeski; editing by Richard Pullin)
