A statement issued from MotoGP advises, “The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports confirm the cancellation of the 2024 Argentina GP.
“Due to the existing cases in Argentina, the event promoter has communicated that it currently cannot guarantee the necessary requirements for the Grand Prix to be held in 2024 according to MotoGP standards.
“This occasion will be replaced in the 2024 calendar. MotoGP hopes to race again at Termas de Rio Hondo in 2025. “
MotoGP is scheduled to arrive at Termas de Rio Hondo for the third round of the 2024 season, from April 5 to 7, on a twinned occasion with the Grand Prix of the Americas the following weekend.
Instead, there will now be two full weekends of rest between Round 2 in the Algarve, Portugal (“Portimao”) from March 22-24 and the new Round 3 at the Circuit of the Americas from April 12-14.
The move is believed to be related to the election of Javier Milei as president of Argentina late last year.
Milei is in favour of small budget cuts and it is believed that they have compromised the viability of the MotoGP cycle.
This is the latest progression in a particularly tumultuous era for the Argentine Motorcycle Grand Prix, which returned to the calendar in 2014.
He missed the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in which the construction of the Termas de Río Hondo pit was destroyed by fire.
The following year, Friday had to be cancelled due to transport delays, with a very compressed Saturday schedule.
At the moment, there are 21 competitions on the calendar, but doubts persist about Kazakhstan, which saw its so-called inaugural competition cancelled last year.
The news also raises questions about IndyCar’s efforts to try to hold an event in Argentina.
The 2024 MotoGP pre-season resumes today with the start of the Shakedown Test in Sepang.
Thanks to the new concession rules, Honda and Yamaha riders will be in action at the venue of the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Specifically, Joan Mir and Luca Marini, from Repsol Honda; Johann Zarco and Takaaki Nakagami, from LCR Honda; and Monster Energy Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins are all fit to participate, as is GasGas’ rookie Pedro Acosta.
