Archaeology of Mexico: pre-Hispanic ruins discovered on the most sensible mountain

Archaeologists say that the site, which in its heyday would have had seven pyramids, a ceremonial domain and a playground, was discovered through the villagers.

It is believed to have been built through the Zapotecs, which inhabited the highlands of southern Mexico.

The sculptures recommend that he may have committed himself to the god of the underworld.

The site is located at a strategic point in the most sensitive of Cerro de Pea mountain in the state of Puebla at a height of 1845 m (6000 ft).

Archaeologists had been hidden since the 6th century. Access to the site is via a rocky path, whose climb lasts two and a half hours.

He discovered through citizens of the village of Santa Cruz Huehuepiaxtla, near there.

So far, two slings (engraved stone panels) have been discovered, such as smaller carved stones.

One of the sculptures is that of a figure with horns and claws dressed in loincloths. Others have the idea of constituting an iguana, an eagle and a female figure, a bat-like deity.

José Alfredo Arellanes, of the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico (INAH), says that 87 glyphs, or symbols, have been so far.

Arellanes said initial research recommends that a ceremonial area, flanked by temples and houses of leaders, be located in the most sensitive of the mountain.

The archaeologist believes he also had seven pyramids and a ball field, a game in which players used their hips to propel a rubber ball through stone hoops.

Puebla is a domain in archaeological ruins, but locals said they were proud to have led archaeologists to this new discovery.

Experts are still analyzing the findings, but said it may have been built through other people from the Zapotec civilization, also known as “the people of the cloud”, which originated in the domain 2500 years ago and has a complicated architecture and a taste of writing founded. glyphs.

Those who followed the Zapotecs believed in many gods, many of whom were related to agriculture or animals.
