Archaeological site discovered within the barriers of Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico

HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N. M. (AP) — An archaeological site that would possibly shed more light on New Mexico’s early history was recently discovered inside the barriers of Holloman Air Force Base. Base officials say geomorphologists and environmentalist members of the 49th Civil Engineering Corps Squadron have discovered a camp that is approximately 8,200 years old and was owned by some of the state’s earliest settlers. Officials say the formation of white sand dunes inadvertently buried the site. They say excavations at the site in early March revealed around 70 items ranging from chipped stones to a rare example of ancient crushed stone.
