If the United States allowed coronavirus infections to become widespread for imaginable collective immunity, the death toll would be huge, especially among vulnerable people, the country’s largest infectious doctor said.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, explained the dangers in a live Instagram session.
“If everyone has contracted it, even with the highest percentage of other people without Array symptoms … many other people are going to die,” Fauci said.
At least 167,298 other people have died in the United States from coronavirus, Johns Hopkins University reported Friday.
“You look at the United States of America, with our obesity epidemic, so to speak. With the amount of other people with high blood pressure. With the number of other people with diabetes. If everyone were infected, the death toll would be massive and absolutely unacceptable,” Fauci said.
Collective immunity is achieved when about 70% to 90% of the population becomes immune to disease, either through infection and recovery or through vaccination. When this happens, the disease is less likely to spread to others who are not immunized because there are simply not enough infectious carriers to succeed in them.
It is unclear whether Covid-19 survivors are immune, although some have yet to recommend that allowing Covid-19 through populations may be only an aid in achieving collective immunity more temporarily if imaginable; however, it would be a crisis for hospitals. Doctors would be beaten and more people would die, not only from coronavirus, but also from other infections.
