Annual EU-Armenia Human Rights Dialogue

In November, the EU and Armenia held their 12th Human Rights Dialogue in Brussels.

This year’s debate focused on a wide variety of issues related to the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all citizens, to which are added those who are in conditions of vulnerability and the fight against discrimination for any reason, in order to build a more inclusive and better citizen society. functioning of democracy. These include: gender equality, the fight against domestic violence, children’s rights, labour rights, conditions of detention, but also freedom of expression and information, as well as the elimination of hate speech and disinformation.

The EU and Armenia discussed cooperation on issues similar to human rights and basic freedoms in multilateral bodies, such as the United Nations, the OSCE and the Council of Europe, and committed to this collaboration.

The EU congratulated Armenia on the positive developments related to human rights since the last Human Rights Dialogue in March 2021.  This refers, for example, to the new law on the rights of persons with disabilities or innovations in the media environment. progress has taken a stand despite the complex and demanding situations posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the tense security scenario. At the same time, participants agreed that the human rights scenario in Armenia can go further and that it is vital to raise public awareness of these issues. The EU commits to continue to offer Armenia technical and monetary assistance in key human rights areas, in particular with regard to the implementation of the ECA human rights provisions.

Armenia provided an update on the government’s plans to conduct a constitutional review process, which deserve to be transparent and inclusive, and other plans for the electoral system.
