BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Andrew Tate, a questionable social media personality and former professional boxer, was arrested Thursday night in Romania for human trafficking and rape, according to local media.
Tate, an Anglo-American. The citizen, who in the past was banned from social media platforms for expressing misogynistic views and hate speech, was reportedly detained with his brother Tristan in the Ilfov region, north of the Romanian capital, Bucharest.
Romania’s anti-organized crime firm said in a statement that four suspects, two British nationals and two Romanians, had been arrested on charges of club membership of an organized criminal group, human trafficking and rape.
The agency, DIICOT, said British citizens recruited women who were subjected to “acts of physical violence and intellectual coercion,” sexually exploited through members of the organization and forced to engage in pornography in an attempt to obtain “significant monetary benefits. “
Photographs published through Romanian media showed Tate handcuffed by masked law enforcement officers.
DIICOT said it had met six other people who were sexually exploited through the organized criminal organization and that five homes were searched on Thursday. The suspects were detained for 24 hours.
Earlier this week, Tate posted a video on Twitter from a mountainous region of Romania, the Eastern European country where he has reportedly lived for the past few years.
Tate was also embroiled in a war of words with 19-year-old weather activist Greta Thunberg this week after sharing a photo of him next to a Bugatti on Twitter and bragging that he had 33 cars.
Video footage of the police raid accompanying the organized crime agency shows several blurry sports cars, wads of money and a gun.
