New satellite images of an ammunition and explosives garage site west of the Ukrainian city of Khmelnitsky show that most of the facility has been wiped off the map. Yesterday, videos emerged showing a surely gigantic fireball emerging over the outskirts of Khmelnitsky. caused through a series of massive secondary explosions. We now know for sure that indeed this site.
The symbol comes to us through Planet Labs and was taken on the morning of May 14, 2023. It shows the domain of the destroyed garage deeply marked and faded because of the massive explosion. The scale of the destruction is quite remarkable, as the secure garage domain is part of a mile wide.
Reports imply that the facility was targeted via drones and that injuries and damage to buildings in the domain occurred due to surprise waves resulting from secondary explosions.
Beyond reports of a drone strike, it is unclear precisely which weapon triggered the explosion. Russia had attacked a similar garage in eastern Ukraine just under two weeks earlier. A secondary explosion originated. You can read our reports on this attack and its aftermath here and here.
What exactly was stored at this site at the time of the explosion is also unclear. It most likely contained old munitions and spoiled explosives dating back to the Cold War era, although some have speculated that newer munitions used for the war effort could possibly have also been stored there. In any case, Russia seems to be targeting those services to destroy any applicable curtains stored there or at least to cause massively destructive secondary explosions.
We will continue to inform you of the destruction of the site. We commissioned a high-resolution image.
