A majority of Africans say that corruption in their country is on the rise, that their government is failing in its efforts to combat it, and that citizens threaten reprisals if they report corruption to authorities, as the latest Pan-African Profile (https://apo-opa. co/41k8N4i) shows.

Released ahead of International Anti-Corruption Day (9 December), the Afrobarometer report is based on nationally representative surveys in 39 African countries.
The effects show that among key public institutions, the police are the most perceived as corrupt. A significant number of citizens report having to pay bribes to get help from the police or avoid riots with the police, as well as to download government documents. and in fitness centers and schools.
Citizen tests vary widely between countries: Gabon, South Africa, Nigeria, Liberia and Uganda are among the worst performing countries in perceived corruption in key public institutions, while Seychelles, Cape Verde, Tanzania and Mauritius are at the top.
