Amazon Web Services to more in Chile and Latin America

SANTIAGO (Reuters) – Amazon Web Services (AWS), a unit of Amazon. com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN), expects sustained expansion in Chile and the rest of Latin America in the coming years despite ongoing political instability, a senior executive told Reuters.

“In the future, we plan to invest more and expand our physical presence in Chile, as consumers demand it and want it to meet their needs,” said Vice President for Latin America Jaime Valles, declining to comment on any investment figures.

The AWS Cloud Platform offers everything from storage, robotics, synthetic intelligence, and more than two hundred services.

Last year, the company opened secure connections to AWS’s global network, known as Edge sites, in Argentina and Chile, in addition to existing sites in Brazil and Colombia. Starting in 2022, AWS plans to open 30 new “AWS Local Zones” by adding infrastructure, storage, and databases in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Brazil.

On Wednesday, the company said it had begun the process of obtaining an environmental permit to build a $205 million knowledge center in the Chilean capital.

“Especially in Latin America, we work a lot with retail and banks,” Valles said.

In Chile, AWS supplies giant corporations such as the distribution conglomerate Cencosud, the government as a “virtual police station” and public-private partnerships such as the control of astronomical knowledge of observatories.

In addition to those services, Valles said the company focuses on startups, providing investment systems and technologies to grow its businesses.

“Ultimately, growth, productivity and employment comes from start-ups or small and medium-sized enterprises,” Valles said.

The company’s focus on expansion and long-term vision allows it to accept investments in Latin America despite the socio-political turbulence in the region, Valles said.

“More productive technology, more education, more systems for start-ups allow us to make a significant difference for Latin America,” Valles said. “That’s our long-term vision and, as you can imagine, it’s totally independent of governments. in power. “
