The versatile Cameron Green has been asked to do more work ahead of a summer of five home games after being included in the Prime Minister’s XI squad for next month’s match against Pakistan.
Wide midfielders Cam Bancroft, Matthew Renshaw and Marcus Harris have also decided to secure David Warner’s position when the veteran retires from the cricket test at the end of the summer at home.
The match in Canberra kicks off on December 6 and will be an opportunity for Green to spend time in midfield after playing just 3 games at the recent ODI World Cup.
The team includes six players with Test experience and is high praise for some of the most successful players in this year’s Sheffield Shield, with three handy scorers: Bancroft (505 points), Beau Webster (487) and Nathan McSweeney (456 ). all selected.
McSweeney will captain the team during the four-day match at Manuka Oval, presenting a glorious opportunity for Bancroft, Renshaw and Harris to impress the selectors ahead of next year’s home series against India.
“We are pleased to praise some of our world-class players over a number of seasons with the opportunity to face quality foreign opponents,” said president of national team recruiters George Bailey.
“The selection in the Prime Minister’s XI is a wonderful honour for any cricketer and plays a role in our men’s representative programme as well as the recent Australian Serie A.
“With a heavy cricket trial workload this summer, this adjustment provides an opportunity to continue on our national red ball team.
“We thank Prime Minister Albanese for his contribution to creating a team that fits the traditions of the sport with some of the most exciting cricketers in the country combined with some very experienced players. “
Thilan Samaraweera will coach the team after running with the Australia A and men’s programmes, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese took the opportunity to congratulate the national team on their success at the World Cup.
“I would like to congratulate Nathan McSweeney on the honor of being named captain. I know he will lead the team expertly and in accordance with the traditions and spirit of this event,” he said.
“I would also like to congratulate Pat Cummins and his world champion team on their World Cup victory.
“Their run to the final and their ability to beat India on Sunday night captivated the country.
“Of course, the exploits of Captain Pat and his team continue what has been an incredibly successful year for the Australian men’s and women’s teams.
