Allocation of renewable hydrogen in Chile for mining vehicles

Chilean economic progress firm CORFO has announced that it will provide approximately $324,000 to finance Hydra’s allocation of low-carbon energy company Engie and the mining organization3.

The task aims to design and obtain a new propulsion system for the mining of cars that run on renewable hydrogen or diesel. Its initial phase will be to carry out a prefeasibility and engineering study. It is then planned to design and manufacture a prototype mobile fuel and propulsion of one hundred to two hundred kW to check its functionality in mining situations in terms of altitude, dust and temperature.

“In addition, the assignment will identify protection protocols for large-scale hydrogen use in the mining industry,” Engie and Mining3 said in a press release. “These industry protocols are essential for a successful deployment of hydrogen in the mining industry.”

According to the organizations involved in the initiative, the purpose of Hydra’s assignment is to expand the solution to convert mining cars from various mining sites in Chile and elsewhere.

Data from Chile’s Ministry of Energy means that renewable hydrogen can reduce the country’s greenhouse fuel emissions by 17% to 27% by 2050.
