First, Levy tested negative after informing tournament officials that a friend he had met at his home in France over the weekend had tested positive for the virus, however, he re-tested and produced a positive result.
Tom Ayling, Wattel and Levy junior, returned the evidence.
A member of the European tour said: “Although Levy first returned a negative COVID-19 check upon arrival at Celtic Manor Resort and had shown no symptoms, after reporting his exposure and due to the incubation era of the virus, he subsequently went back to check and returned a positive result.
“Wattel, known as a levy twist after the European tour, and Public Health Wales worked collaboratively to track and track. He also tried again but yielded a negative result, as did Levy’s caddie, Tom Ayling.
“However, as a precautionary measure, Wattel did not participate in the tournament in accordance with Public Health Wales guidelines.
“Levy, Ayling and Wattel are now all at a distance and the European tour and their medical team will help the other 3 people in this period.”
Wattel replaced the tournament through Matthew Baldwin of England, while Levy replaced through Martin Simonsen of Denmark.
News of Levy’s positive check was met with surprise at Celtic Manor, where the players’ living room closed on Thursday. The on-site hotel has also closed bars and restaurants to adopt a thorough cleanliness.
Englishman Matt Southgate told Sky Sports News: “I’m pretty surprised. I have been betting the last few weeks and the Tour has done a task with the comforts of the check and has allowed us to return and play.
“I have competed against Alex for years as amateurs and covered the Challenge Tour and, above all, I appreciate my most productive wishes for Alex and hope he will do it as soon as possible.”
Andrew Johnston, who retired after nine holes at the British Masters after suffering to manage life in the tournament’s ‘bubble’, added: ‘I hope you have a PlayStation or something.
“I think the European Tour has played really well for so many weeks and has only had a positive result. Inevitably (with) the players who travel.”
