The Islamic base that oversees the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, Islam’s third-holiest site, said the mosque and buildings would be closed due to considerations about the novel coronavirus.
Sheikh Omar Kiswani, the mosque’s director, said Sunday that prayers would continue to be held outside. The shutdown will have to continue indefinitely.
The Iranian official, who is leading the country’s response to the worst coronavirus outbreak in the Middle East, said Sunday that the pandemic could overwhelm fitness services in the country, which is under serious U. S. sanctions.
Iran is grappling with one of the worst outbreaks outside of China, with around 13,000 confirmed cases and more than 600 deaths. The actual number of infections may be even higher, as questions have been raised about government transparency.
“If the trend continues, there will not be enough capacity,” Ali Reza Zali, who is leading the crusade against the outbreak, was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.
Iran is believed to have around 110,000 hospital beds, 30,000 in the capital, Tehran. The government has pledged to set up cell clinics if necessary.
Zali also claimed that “many” of those who died from the COVID-19 disease caused by the virus were healthy, a rare admission by the local government that the virus doesn’t just feed on the ill-health and elderly.
The Ministry of Health has published figures showing that while 55% of deaths occurred in those aged 60 to 60, around 15% were under 40 years of age.
For most people, the novel coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially the elderly and others with existing health problems, this can cause more serious illnesses, including pneumonia.
Most people do this within a few weeks, but the virus is highly contagious and can be spread through other people without visual symptoms.
The virus has inflamed more than 150,000 people worldwide and killed more than 5,700. More than 70,000 people worldwide have recovered after being inflamed.
In Iran, the virus has even inflamed several senior officials, including the first vice president, ministers, parliamentarians, members of the Revolutionary Guards and members of the Ministry of Health.
However, the government has been slow to adopt the measures taken in other more affected countries. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday ruled out a blanket quarantine and said the government was striving to keep borders open.
The country has also struggled to respond, in part because of crippling sanctions imposed by the Trump administration after it withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal. Last week, Iran asked the International Monetary Fund for a $5 billion loan, the first time it has asked for one. a foreign lender since before the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
The U. S. says it submitted humanitarian aid. Iran rejected it.
Countries in the Middle East have imposed draconian restrictions, canceled public events and, in some cases, asked non-essential businesses to close their doors in the coming weeks.
In the skyscraper-filled city of Dubai, the global business hub and in the United Arab Emirates, the government announced on Sunday that all cinemas, arcades and gyms would remain closed until the end of the month.

Kuwait, a small, oil-rich country, has closed its food malls, hair salons and barbershops to curb the spread of the virus. Authorities have allowed cafes to remain open, but have clarified that a maximum of five consumers can queue at a time. time and they will have to be one meter apart from each other.
Dalia Samhouri, a senior official at the World Health Organization’s regional office, suggested that countries take more steps to aggressively trace those who have been in contact with reported cases and impose strict quarantine measures.
“It’s not too past because of the scenario or involving it,” he said.
In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trial on serious corruption charges, which was due to begin this week, has been postponed by two months due to restrictions on public gatherings.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu has pushed for an emergency unit with his main rival, former army leader Benny Gantz, after three inconclusive elections and more than a year of political deadlock. Gantz has been open to the idea.
