The German Air Force’s fleet of A400M tactical transport aircraft will improve its commissioning from the end of this decade, and work has begun on a new facility at its Wunstorf Air Base.
An innovative rite for the A400M long-term maintenance centre was held on 9 October in the presence of officials, added Airbus Defence’s CEO CEO.
In the new maintenance center, around three hundred workers will be responsible for the service and maintenance of the A400M aircraft from mid-2027.
“The A400M has been providing reliable service to the German Armed Forces for more than 10 years,” says Schoellhorn. “To keep it that way, the new center is an important step forward. Here we will deepen the cooperation with the German Armed Forces and further the availability and operational capability of the A400M. “
“The A400M is an indispensable component of the Air Force, whether as an aircraft carrier, as a tanker or in its medical evacuation role,” Gerhartz said. “Evacuation missions from Kabul or Sudan would not have been imaginable without the A400M,” he added, stressing: “Global readiness with our A400M fleet – this is only imaginable with Airbus. “
Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 and operational commissioning will begin in mid-2027. Finally, it is expected to employ three hundred people.
“Average product prices are in the triple digits,” says Airbus.
Berlin is the largest visitor to the A400M developed in Europe, and according to Cirium data, it currently has 41 in service, out of a total of 53 committed.
In July 2023, German procurement and structure company BAAINBw awarded Airbus a seven-and-a-half-year contract for the ongoing maintenance of its Atlas transports. This covers the provision of MRO activities at its Manching site near Munich as well as at Hannover Airport and Wunstorf.
