Canada’s largest airline has come under fire on Twitter after celebrating the end of Covid restrictions in the country by saying the regulations were “not justified through science. “
Last week, Air Canada said the Covid travel restrictions put in place by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were “not justified science. “They published them after the government announced that its existing Covid regulations would be removed.
“Air Canada welcomes the removal of those restrictions, noting that the air is safe and that the measures were not justified through science,” said Craig Landry, the airline’s executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Without substantiating his claims, Landry went on to say that the rest of the travel regulations “will greatly facilitate travel, assistance will continue to stabilize the country’s air transport sector and Canada’s economy. “
The comments went viral over the weekend following a report via True North news, prompting many Canadians on Twitter to condemn the airline.
“People who can’t handle luggage, fees, boarding or takeoff on time never, suddenly become infectious disease experts,” former radio host Dean Blundell wrote. “That verifies. Air Canada is a joke. “
“We want a high-speed train,” Eurasia Group vice president Gerald Butts added in a tweet. “Air Canada is the main explanation for why we don’t have it. Regulatory capture, but the edition well-educated because we are Canadians. “
Podcast host Norma Wilner added, “I’m very curious about what Air Canada thinks IS justified through science. “
“Air Canada says masking needs are justified through science. I suppose they are referring to the “science” of economics. The pursuit of profit continues to put more lives at risk,” added a fourth user.
Restrictions imposed by the Canadian government before October 1 included a requirement for travelers to get vaccinated against covid before landing in the country, as well as rules on masks on board flights.
While the country has lagged behind European states in allowing unvaccinated air passengers in, Canada has overtaken the United States, where vaccination levels against the disease are significantly lower, according to figures compiled by the New York Times.
Landry said in his message that “consumers and Air Canada team will have the option to wear masks at all times and we also inspire consumers to monitor their own fitness to make sure they feel comfortable and have travel compatibility. “
Numerous studies have shown the effectiveness of masks and the vaccine in preventing the spread and worst effects of covid, which has killed more than a million people in the United States and more than 45,000 in Canada, according to Times figures.
