After the coronavirus closes, Machu Picchu will restrict the number of tourists by reopening in July

Machu Picchu is expected to open its doors on an un announced date in July, The Agence France-Press (AFP) news agency reported on Monday, bringing Peruvian officials closer.

Jean Paul Benavente, governor of the Cusco region, told the point of sale that only 675 tourists will be able to enter the day, with the aim of selling social estrangement and implementing new fitness protection measures. Groups of tourists guided by a consultant will be limited to seven visitors and a mask will be required.

It is estimated that the UNESCO World Heritage site attracts between 2,000 and 3,000 visitors a day before the COVID-19 fitness crisis, with more than one million visitors a year.

The pandemic has hit Peruvian industry hard; about 100,000 more people in Cusco are hired in the tourism sector, AFP reports. Peruvian Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos said the national tourism industry had already lost about $3.3 billion this year.

According to the U.S. Embassy in Peru, Peruvian government leaders closed the country’s borders and limited all foreigners from March 16, possibly returning again.

In January, the site allegedly installed cameras and launched drones for tourists to practice more after six visitors were arrested for allegedly damaging a component of the 15th-century Inca citadel, as well as defecating the site’s sun temple.

The semicircular temple of the Sun is intended to be one of the greatest sacred structures of the Inca citadel, as the faithful would have made offerings to the sun within its walls.
