New Delhi, Nov 4 (PTI) After Bangladesh, Sri Lanka was forced to cancel its opening educational consultation in the national capital on Saturday due to “severe” pollution.
Bangladesh, which arrived here on Wednesday, did not have to practice on Friday as pollution levels in the city reached the “severe plus” category.
Sri Lanka followed suit and stayed at home on Saturday when the air index stood at 407 in the morning.
“It was canceled because of the air quality issue,” an SLC source said, referring to Saturday’s practice.
However, Bangladesh will most likely have to fight pollutants two days before Monday’s match. They are expected to work out Saturday starting at 6 p. m.
An AQI between 0 and 50 is “good”, 51 and 100 “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “moderate”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor” and 401 and 500 “severe”.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) will move the event out of Delhi, but a decision on whether to continue the event will not be made until that day.
“Lately we are assessing the situation. The ICC and our hosts, BCCI, take the well-being of all participants seriously and monitor the air quality in Delhi. We are taking recommendations to assess the situation,” an ICC spokesperson told PTI.
Air quality is assessed by fitness officials on the day you are fit.
This is not the first time Sri Lanka has faced Delhi’s notorious air pollution. Players were required to wear masks in the check series in 2017.
On Friday, Bangladesh team manager Khaled Mahmoud said the players developed coughs after leaving for the city and hence the order to cancel the first educational session.
On Friday, the air fell to the “severe plus” category.
“A lot of (cricketers) went out (on Thursday) and now they’re coughing, so there’s a threat and that’s why we’ve cancelled education so they don’t feel bad,” Mahmud said at the team hotel.
