The sky was grey and the ground a little muddy on Sunday, but the United Labour Party’s birthday party is back.

After being canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, the two-day Labor Day began Sunday at Northmoreland Park in Allegheny Township and ends today.

It features food, rides, a circus, games, bingo, music, craft vendors, and a flea market.

Springdale’s Fran Kropelak was there Sunday and said he would likely return Monday.

Kropelak remembers taking his son and daughter to the festival. Now she is here with them and their children.

“It’s wonderful to be able to bring my grandchildren here and let them have fun,” she said. “I also come to see other people I know. “

It rained in the morning, keeping some vendors away from the flea market. But that stopped in the early afternoon, and there were even times when the sun came out.

“So far, given the weather, it’s been pretty busy,” said Chris Panichella, Westmoreland County’s parks and recreation coordinator. “The smart thing is, it’s been two days. “

The forecast for Monday looks better, with generally sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s.

“We’re expecting a big crowd tomorrow,” Panicella said. We are in a position for them. We waited a year for other people to come out. We can’t wait to see them all.

Tristan Aumer, of Alberton, served funnel and deep-fried Oreos in his trailer, The Funnel Cake Shoppe.

Most years, Aumer said he participated in five festivals and a few other events. It closed in 2020.

“I didn’t do anything last year,” he said.

While Labor United is one of their biggest occasions of the year, Aumer said it’s smart to come back.

“It’s bigger than doing nothing,” he said.

Friends Dave Ziner of Mt. Pleasant and Jim Minerd of Scottdale covered up Aumer’s funnel pie. They came here to go to the flea market and to eat.

“I’m glad he’s back. It’s something everyone looks forward to,” Minerd said. “A lot of times you see a lot of old friends. “

Arnold’s No. 2 firefighters were serving their famous fries, which could be eaten almost exclusively at Labor United. The branch expects to cook two tons of potatoes during the two days of the festival.

Funnel cakes are so popular that festival organizers have hired two vendors to meet the demand.

“You can’t leave without a funnel cake,” Kropelak said. “You have to have a funnel pie. “

On Monday, the second and final day of the festival, The Townsmen Plus One will perform at noon and 1 p. m. , and Chuck Blasko and The Vogues will perform at 3:30 p. m. and 4:30 p. m.

The Zerbini Family Circus is open at noon, 3:30 p. m. and the five p. m. Se requires a $4 per day activity pass to attend the circus.

Admission and parking are free. Pets are allowed.

The Labor United Celebration is conducted through Labor United Celebration Inc. and the Westmoreland County Office of Parks and Recreation to commemorate Labor Day in the county.
