(BRIEF) The Swedish Transport Administration contracted AFRY and WSP facilities to expand a rail plan for the Skellefteå – Degerthroughn segment of the Bothnia North Line, a 270-kilometer mainline coastal rail assignment linking Umeå and Luleå. This railway, once fully realized, will improve travel safety, speed and environmental sustainability, serving as important infrastructure for commercial investment in northern Sweden. The assignment will consist of 4 phases: planning, study, design and delivery, culminating in a comprehensive railway plan, structure documents and an environmental impact assessment. The advancement of the northern Bothnia line is an important component of Sweden’s green transition and is expected to reduce carbon dioxide allocations by around 80,000 tonnes per year by favoring rail transport over road transport. The project is expected to be completed by 2030.
(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 29-Jan-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The Swedish Transport Administration has commissioned AFRY, together with WSP, to produce a railway plan for the Skellefteå – Degerbyn section, which is part of the North Bothnia Line.
The Northern Bothnia Line is a new 270-kilometre coastal railway between Umeå and Luleå which, when fully developed, will enable faster, safer and more environmentally friendly travel and connections to Europe. The Northern Bothnia line will be a vital prerequisite for primary commercial investment in northern Sweden.
The allocation means that AFRY, in collaboration with WSP, will extend a rail plan for the five-mile segment Skellefteå – Degerbyn – AC/BD county boundary, the component within the municipality of Skellefteå to the county boundary. It will be carried out in four stages (planning, study, design and delivery) and will result in a railway plan, structural documents and an environmental impact assessment.
The assignment includes, among other things, the exit from central Skellefteå, a tunnel, regional train station in Byske and areas of national interest. The exit from central Skellefteå is characterized by inhabited land and existing infrastructure that requires close coordination with Skellefteå municipality.
“We are pleased to have the opportunity to continue to contribute to the progress of the Northern Line of Bothnia. Long-term maritime infrastructure planning is exciting and this task plays a central role in the green transition and is expected to reduce carbon dioxide. “Emissions will rise to 80,000 tonnes per year thanks to the shift from road to rail transport,” says Folke Sandberg, AFRY’s business planning and design manager.
“It’s not just about railroad tracks. The Northern Line of Bothnia is intended for the green transition of the whole country and is a key element in unlocking the prospects of northern Sweden. We are proud to be part of building a more sustainable long-term where everyday life becomes smoother and emissions are reduced,” says Anna Lundman, WSP’s Director of Transportation and Infrastructure Industry.
The project will be completed by 2030.
