A woman in Mexico, plagued by food poisoning and poor care, suffers a wave of 8 suicides

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A woman in Mexico suffering from food poisoning and poor medical care has suffered a wave of eight suicides in the past 4 1/2 months, the government said Thursday.

The federal penal office reported the suicides in a country and said it was taking steps to improve the situation at the women’s prison in Morelos state, south of Mexico City.

The office said it had replaced prison guards and senior sports, cultural and craft activities for the prison’s roughly 1,000 inmates.

Earlier reports this year revealed that situations at the prison were harsh and inmates were given rotten food. The government’s National Human Rights Commission said 400 detainees suffered from food poisoning during the 2022 outbreaks.

The report stated that women did not get proper medical care after becoming ill; Many didn’t get medicine because there wasn’t any.

A statement issued in July through a coalition of human rights and human rights teams said the lack of medical care was “a systematic violation of the right of imprisoned women to receive medical care” and said it was a “gross violation of human rights and dignity. “

The federal government has noted that inmates have been transferred from other states in recent years.
