A man stopped howler monkeys being smuggled into Texas from Mexico

We hear a lot about drugs and parts being smuggled into the U. S. from Mexico, but this story will get attention.

U. S. Customs and Border Patrol says that on March 4, a man driving a truck and attempting to cross into the U. S. near Brownsville, Texas, was arrested at the border checkpoint.

CBP officials recall certain cars for what they call a more thorough inspection. In this case, a search of the man’s vehicle revealed the presence of two live howler monkeys inside. Howlers are known for their piercing screams, they are not considered threatening. Human. But because they regularly live in the treetops, their contact with other people is limited.

They are 2 to 2 1/2 feet long and weigh about 20 pounds at maturity.

The guy was arrested on several charges and the monkeys were sent to a large and extraordinary zoo in Brownsville. In addition to being around the world to be imported as pets, CBP says they are among a number of animals and pieces not allowed in the U. S. UU. de Mexico because of the potential viruses and pathogens they can bring with them.
