A little piece of Portugal in Canada

Although as well known as Chinatown or Little Italy in New York, the “Little Portugal” in Montreal, Canada, is a thriving and varied neighborhood.

Visiting this varied position can open your eyes only to new cultures, but also to another vision of a culture you already know well.

Le Petit Portugal, or in French “Petit Portugal”, is located on the western component of Montreal. This migrant community flourished in the 50s when relations developed between the governments of Canada and Portugal.

In Canada, there were more paintings and more jobs available. In the following decade, Portuguese culture began to flourish, when many local Portuguese began to buy their own homes and set up businesses. It eventually became a multicultural neighborhood that looks a bit like Portugal in Canada.

Located on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, the community is close to one of Montreal’s biggest attractions, namely Mount Royal Park, from where you have a breathtaking view of the city. This domain is home to many Portuguese shops, restaurants and cafes, as well as the Parque de Portugal.

This small park created in 1980 by landscape architect Carlos R. Martinez to honor the Portuguese community. There are many colorful tiles that are used to the Portuguese taste with a fountain, a pavilion and a monument added in 2003. The community is also very colorful, with many works of art and nods to Portuguese design.

For a delicious “piri-piri” in Canada, Romados is the ideal position. They have real enthusiasts in Montgenuine and dare to say that it rivals genuine treatment in Portugal!

For all your Portuguese essentials, head to the Boucherie Épicerie Soares

For the delicious “pastéis de nata”, Pâtisserie Notre Maison, which also offers other tasty cakes and desserts.

For an original Portuguese meal, don’t miss Chez José Café.

To make a stopover in Little Portugal, you’ll first need to make sure you apply for a Canada eTA. The Canada eTA is an easier option for the visa because there is no need to make a stopover at an embassy or schedule appointments. You can apply for the Canada eTA online in about 10 minutes, and it’s valid for five years.
