For many African migrants, El Dorado International Airport in Bogota, Colombia, is now an obstacle in their long adventure to the United States. That’s why Annie Correal, who spent January and February covering the Andes region for the New York Times, recently made the airport a notification destination.
He discovered dozens of other people waiting to board a plane to Central America and from there to the U. S. -Mexico border. Some were stuck in the terminal for days for bureaucratic or monetary reasons.
Ms. Correal asked them about their reports and if she could simply record their conversations. He had the idea that interacting from inside a busy airport “could produce a wonderful sound,” he recalled in an interview.
Correal thinks so because, for more than 15 years, she has worked as a print and audio journalist. Produced audio segments for “This American Life”; contributed to the launch of the groundbreaking Spanish-language podcast “Radio Ambulante”; and since 2013 he has worked at The Times, where he worked on immigration for the newspaper, contributed to “The Daily” and hosted “The Headlines,” a morning news program.
Correal’s article about the airport, which includes audio excerpts from his interviews, is part of his assignment to the Times’ Andean bureau, which covers news in Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.
In an interview, he talked about his experience of moving between other mediums and continents. This verbal exchange has been edited.
