Israeli police said Wednesday they arrested 3 young men on their trip to Mount Meron for the annual Lag Ba’Omer celebration, saying they planned to sabotage the aircraft at the site.
All 3 were discovered with folds, cutters and spray paint on bags used to bring pieces used for Jewish prayer, The Times of Israel reported, informing police.
Police suspect the 3 men planned to use the equipment for Meron’s team.
This is the time when the organization was recently arrested on suspicion of attempting to sabotage the apparatus at the site.
Several Israelis linked to an ultra-Orthodox extremist sect were arrested by police on Tuesday.
Police discovered 4 bags with “sharp tweezers, application knives, hammers, paint eggs and gloves suspected of being used to smash the electrical formula of communication equipment, speakers and screens that had been installed,” police said in a statement.
Hundreds of thousands of other people are expected in Meron on Wednesday night for the annual pilgrimage in honor of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who is buried there.
A policeman accused the “extremist offenders” of “trying by all means to sabotage the pilgrimage. “Damage to infrastructure becomes damage that threatens the entire event and causes the misery of the celebrants. those who are on the site,” ToI said.
It comes after a fatal stampede killed another forty-five people at last year’s Lag Ba’Omer event, leaving the government on high alert for this year’s celebration.
