Seven governors from across the United States have teamed up to buy wholesale coronavirus tests, he announced Tuesday.
“With severe shortages and delays in bank accounts and the federal administration [Trump] seeking to cut check funds, states combine to earn millions of faster checks to save lives and curb the spread of COVID-19,” Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, Republican, said in a statement.
The agreement, with the Rockefeller Foundation, will allow the signatory to obtain 500,000 antigen tests from personal manufacturers. These signatories belong to Maryland, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina and Virginia.
Antigen tests, which involve the collection of fluids from a nasal or throat sample, can produce effects in less than 20 minutes, allowing states to temporarily trip and COVID-19 outbreaks. However, accuracy can be a problem: according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, “Antigenic testing is more likely to bypass an active infection.”
However, the ability to temporarily control other people’s giant amounts is exciting not only for governors, but also for public fitness experts: as Dr. Thomas Tsai of Harvard University told Business Insider, such controls are whether there is any hope of opening the economy safely.
“So it’s transparent that a coordinated strategy will need to be implemented,” Tsai said last month. “If this cannot happen at the federal point for political reasons, then it has to be done at the state point. Governors will need to paint in combination and shape interstate pacts and collaborations to coordinate regional trials and social estrangement policies. it also translates within a state to coordinate this county-to-county effort.”
Under this agreement, the Rockefeller Foundation will work to facilitate investment for the Interstate Test Agreement, which is open to new members.
“Widespread testing is one of the top critical teams we have to prevent the spread of this virus and save lives,” Michigan governess Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, said in a press release. “I hope the President and Congress cling to our leadership and paintings in combination in a stimulus package that includes states like ours so we can continue to protect our families.
