Mumbai: A 44-year-old dilapidated residential construction in Sai Baba Nagar in Borivali West, which was declared “unfit to inhabit” through the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in 2020, collapsed on Friday afternoon. viral on social networks.

No casualties were reported in the incident as citizens ran after construction began shaking and vibrating around 10 a. m.

The construction component of the company Om Shree Geetanjali Nagar, built in 1978. 13 constructions of this company are divided into another 3 wings. There is one construction in wing A, 3 constructions in wing B and nine constructions in wing C. On Friday, the A wing construction crashed.

City officials said that in 2019 they sent a notice to the housing corporation requesting a structural audit of the construction, as a result of which the construction declared a dilapidated design in 2020 and a demolition notice was issued. However, the citizens living in this building challenged the BMC’s opinion and went to the Bombay High Court (HC) and the case was the subject of litigation.

“We sent out the first notice in 2019 asking occupants to submit a structural audit report of their construction. The first report showed that the building is in a dilapidated state and wants to be demolished. Soon after, citizens wrote another report indicating that the construction is not in ruins, but can be repaired,” Deputy Municipal Commissioner Nivrutti Gondhali told HT on Friday.

“When there are two contradictory reports, we send a Technical Audit Committee (TAC) for a cash investigation and the final TAC report confirms that the construction is not worth inhabiting and wishes to be demolished. As a result, some of the citizens approached HC and filed a petition and the order stated that citizens can remain at their own risk,” Gondhali said.

Three other families resided in the construction. Eyewitnesses say the construction began to vibrate around 10 a. m. m. of Friday, after which all the members ran out.

“It was around 10:30 a. m. when the construction tilted, after which everyone fled. You can take out your belongings slightly because it is transparent that the construction will collapse. We waited around 2 hours outside the construction but didn’t dare to enter as the rooms and quantities dropped one by one. Total construction collapsed around 12:30 p. m. “Said Jaikant Shah, one of the residents, who had stayed with the company since its construction.

“Most of the apartment owners live here because they have rented their apartments and most of the apartments are empty because no tenant would stay inside a dilapidated structure,” Shah said.

Another resident, Hemant Shah, who has lived in the company for 40 years, said: “The BMC had declared it ruinous two years ago. But citizens and tenants were reluctant to take further action and had to go to court. There are other buildings in Wing C that have also won notices, but the occupants who live there have already finalized a redevelopment plan with a personal builder.

Jayesh Patel, a store owner across the street and an eyewitness to the incident, said the construction collapsed like a deck of cards. because of the dust debris and everyone on the road adjacent to the construction cough,” Patel said.

The city said that in addition to wing A, they also notified buildings B-1, B-2 and B-3 that are located in the same facility. After the incident, the municipal government blocked the entire complex.

“We have evacuated all adjacent buildings as a precaution and provided an area at a school near BMC where they can move their belongings. This was communicated to everyone through loudspeakers,” said Bhagyashree Kapse, Deputy City Commissioner (DMC), who visited the scene.

City officials said that since the collapsed construction is private, it is BMC’s duty to provide them with housing. As of early April 2022, BMC said there were a total of 337 dilapidated buildings in Mumbai.
