363 Kerala prisoners tested in Covid-19, state tally rises to 44K

At least 363 inmates at Thiruvananthapuram Central Prison tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) Sunday after the death of a 71-year-old Covid-19 criminal, leading the government to control all detainees. The cumulative number of positive cases in the criminal is expected to increase, as 250 inmates will go through checks on Monday, authorities said.

“Most inflamed cases are asymptomatic. We drove them away and those with severe symptoms were taken to Covid hospitals,” said crime director P Nirmalanandan. Many sub-trials and those nearing the end of their sentences were released earlier to ease the burden of the pandemic epidemic, he said.

Prison infections occur on the day Kerala recorded 10 deaths and 1,530 new cases of the virus.

The massive infection in the central prison, home to more than 1,000 inmates, has worried fitness officers who are already overworked from work and others, as the cause of the infection that has to close neighborhoods remains uncertain.

Of the newly recorded infections in the state, 53 are fitness workers, said fitness minister K K Shailaja. The chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, and seven of his ministers tested negative after repeated tests, but said they would end the two-week quarantine. They opted for quarantine after some of the districts they interacted with at the crash site of the Air India Express plane in Kozhikkode last week tested positive for Covid-19.

Meanwhile, the CM praised fitness officers and others for doing a remarkable task in difficult times. “We are in two hundred days of Covid crisis. Looking back, we can proudly say that this is not just a moment of depression and loss. It’s a moment of courage, compassion, stamina and survival,” he tweeted on Sunday. Kerala was the first to report a case of the virus in January following the return of a Thrissur medical student from China. With ten other victims, the death toll in Kerala rose to 157. The total number of cases in the state is 44,384, with 15,310 active cases and 28,878 cases recovered.
