22 killed and 33 injured when a bus collides with a truck in southern Egypt

CAIRO, Egypt — At least 22 other people were killed and 33 injured in a turn of the car destination Tuesday near Egypt’s southern Minya province, the government said.

The bus with about forty-five passengers crashed into a desk truck near the village of al-Barsha, about three hundred kilometers (185 miles) south of the capital, Cairo, in al-Minya governorate, Minya’s local government said in a statement.

“The truck was parked on the side of the road to replace a tire when it was hit from behind through the bus going from Sohag governorate to Cairo,” a governorate representative said.

Ambulances rushed to the scene of the injured at minya hospitals.

Road injuries kill thousands of people every year in Egypt, which has a poor record on transport safety. Accidents are basically caused by speeding, bad roads, or poor enforcement of traffic laws.

Some 7,000 more people died in traffic accidents in the country in 2020, according to official figures.
