The program, called Vision for Boston, provides eye care to students at their schools. 20/20 Onsite’s licensed optometrists stop at schools in December and January. All students in attractive schools can take eye exams at no cost, regardless of their insurance coverage. Any student who needs glasses can get them for free.

Massachusetts state law requires all Boston Public Schools students in grades K0 through 5, 7, and 10 to undergo one year of in-school eye exam. Students are assessed by BPS nurses and fitness paraprofessionals, as well as NCO students and instructors, who also climb into schools to participate in assessments. All students who do not pass their eye exams will be marked as requiring a full eye exam.

Students who may be visually impaired have the opportunity to participate in the Vision for Boston program, where 20/20 Onsite provides students in grades 4-12 with a comprehensive and thorough eye exam. Any student in need of corrective eyeglasses can obtain a new pair of prescription eyeglasses from Warthrough Parker, which will be installed and distributed through the 20/20 team on-site. They have designed a particular line of eyeglasses for the students who are part of this program as part of the Warthrough Parker Alumni Project.

“We’re proud of the work we’ve done and the positive impact we’ve had on the Boston community alongside our Vision for Boston partners. Since we created Pupils Project in 2015, we’ve been focused on eliminating barriers to vision care access in schools across the country, while also helping students feel excited by and confident in their glasses. We’re excited to see the program continue to grow in our fourth consecutive year of working together.” – Hannah Kowalski, Director of Social Innovation at Warby Parker

Vision exams take place on board either 20/20 Onsite’s Mobile Vision Clinic, a fully-equipped optometry vehicle parked right outside the school, or 20/20 Onsite’s Mobile Vision Suite, an optometry office set up inside the school. 20/20 Onsite optometrists and vision specialists conduct pre-testing that includes capturing a high-definition image of the retina and an eye pressure test for glaucoma detection, before students receive an eye exam using fully-digital, top-of-the-line equipment.
