17 killed and injured in vehicle collision in southern Egypt

A turn of car fate in southern Egypt left at least 17 other people dead and four injured, the government said on Wednesday.

The crash occurred Tuesday when a passenger minibus collided with a truck on a highway in Juhaynah district in Sohag province, 390 kilometers (244 miles) south of the capital, Cairo, the provincial government said.

Ambulances rushed to the scene to transport the bodies and wounded to provincial hospitals, the government said in a statement.

Fatal traffic injuries kill thousands every year in Egypt, which has a poor track record in transportation safety. Accidents and collisions are basically caused by speeding, bad roads, or poor enforcement of traffic laws.

In July, a passenger bus collided with a tow truck parked on a highway in the southern province of Minya, killing 23 other people and injuring at least 30.
