16 in flash floods and volatile weather in Oman

Dubai: Another sixteen people have died, while four remain missing due to flash floods and extreme weather conditions Oman has witnessed in recent days, local media reported.

Brigadier General Mohammad bin Nasser Al Kindi, director general of operations for the Royal Oman Police, said more than 40 people were rescued in the past five days.

The Ambulance and Civil Defence Authority (SADC) said it is still searching for missing people in Dhofar governorate. A circle of relatives of 8 people disappeared after being swept away by the waves on Al Mughsayl beach in Salalah.

Starting Sunday, Oman is expected to experience a new episode of volatile weather due to the formation of low atmospheric stress in the northeastern Arabian Sea, the Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement.

The low pressure scenario is forming lately near the Indian coastal region of Gujarat. On Friday night and Saturday morning, it may become a tropical depression as it moves westward toward the Arabian Sea coast over the next two days.

Rainfall of varying intensity, between 30 and 80 mm, can cause flooding of valleys and reefs. Horizontal visibility would possibly be reduced. Thunderstorms. The sea will be rough with waves on the coasts of the Arabian Sea and the Arabian Sea, with a maximum height of four meters. There may be chances of seawater becoming larger in some low-lying coastal areas.

Oman has reopened tourist sites that were closed due to poor weather conditions, SADC said on Thursday. However, Al Mughsayl beach in Dhofar governorate will remain closed due to “ongoing national efforts to search for missing persons,” SADC added.
